Event details

We will be joined, via Zoom, by Vanessa E. Thompson, who will start the event by talking about her article, “Beyond Policing, For a Politics of Breathing,” about the continuities between colonial policing and racist policing today—and the need for abolitionist politics.  (You can download a PDF of the article above.)

We will then, together, have a conversation about how we may bring these ideas to our actions and campaigns against racist policing in Berlin today.

Vanessa E. Thompson researches in the fields of Black Studies, critical racism and migration studies, policing and abolition. She works with transnational abolitionist movements, is a co-founder of the Initiative of Christy Schwundeck and a member in the International Commission on the death of Oury Jalloh.

The input will be in English, the discussion will be in English and German. Please register at ihr-seid-keine-sicherheit@riseup.net. The 2g + test rule will apply.

Discussion questions

Below are some of questions we will discuss at the event.

  • People often understand police abolition as relevant only to the US. Do we need an abolitionist politics in Berlin/Germany, and if so, why?

  • What does punishment look like in Germany beyond policing? In the criminal legal system? In job centers? In schools?

  • What should our strategies look like so that they meet the moment? How do we approach change: What role for organizing? Campaigns? Research? Policy change?

  • What coalitions do we need to build, including internationally?
